Industry AnalysisUBS National Bank Charter: What It Changes for Advisors and Clients (2026)

UBS Bank USA became a national bank in the first quarter of 2026, and UBS has said everyday banking products for its U.S. wealth clients arrive in 2027. This page sets out what is on the public record: the dates, what the regulator's approval letter requires, what UBS has said it will offer, and what changes for clients and advisors now.

The dates

DateEvent
October 2025UBS files its application to convert to a national bank (OCC control number 2025-Conversion-343672)
January 13, 2026The OCC gives conditional approval (OCC letter #1360)
March 20, 2026UBS reports final OCC approval (first-quarter 2026 report; American Banker)

The bank operates as UBS Bank USA, National Association, under OCC charter number 25396, and its headquarters stays in Salt Lake City. The bank converted from a Utah state charter, and UBS says the OCC is now its primary regulator.

What the approval letter requires

We read the OCC's conditional approval letter in full. It attaches one condition, which stays in force for the bank's first three years of operation. The bank must give the OCC's Large and Global Financial Institutions Supervisory Office at least 60 days' written notice before significantly deviating from its business plan, and must obtain the OCC's written no-objection before doing so. If the change is itself the subject of an application, no separate notice is needed.

The letter also lists seven pre-conversion requirements. They include adequate fidelity bond coverage, board-adopted policies for safe and sound operation, an application for stock in a Federal Reserve Bank, and a notice to the OCC if the facts in the filing materially change. The approval would have lapsed, absent an OCC extension, if the conversion had not been completed within six months of the decision, and UBS reported final approval on March 20, about two months after it.

What UBS has said it will offer

American Banker reported that wealth clients today have basic services such as securities-based lending and credit cards, that nothing changes immediately beyond adding N.A. to the bank's name, and that certain types of personal checking and savings accounts have been available through brokerage accounts. A UBS spokesman told the publication that personal checking and savings accounts will be rolled out in 2027. UBS has given the year and no month. Reuters reported that the charter lets UBS offer checking, savings and mortgages.

The Financial Times reported in July, citing people familiar with the plans, that UBS would pilot U.S. banking services with employees as early as December 2026, ahead of a wider rollout to wealth clients, and that it aims to reach clients with between $2 million and $10 million to invest. Press accounts differ on when in 2027 clients would see the products, and none of those timings comes from UBS.

How the 2027 compensation plan treats banking

UBS's 2027 advisor compensation plan, which AdvisorHub reported in September, counts checking and savings deposits toward net new money. The plan's other changes are covered in UBS Pathways and the 2027 comp plan.

What it changes now

For clients, nothing changes at once: the visible change is the name, and certain checking and savings accounts were already available through brokerage accounts, though American Banker reported they were not as universally accessible as the new accounts are meant to be. For advisors, the compensation treatment starts January 1, 2027, and UBS has said the accounts follow in 2027.
