How Do You Pay for CFP Certification? The Cost, the Scholarships, and the Deadlines
The CFP mark costs several thousand dollars in coursework, about a thousand for the exam, and a fee every year after. Most of it can be paid for by someone else. Here is the bill from the CFP Board's own pages, the scholarships that cover each piece with amounts and links, the deadlines in date order starting with ten that close September 30, and how to apply so you are not disqualified by your own registration.

The short answer: CFP® certification costs three things, and each has its own funding. Coursework, which one of the largest providers prices at $5,565 to $8,845, is covered by education scholarships that pay the program directly and can include books and a review course. The exam, $825 early, $925 standard, $1,025 late for the November 2026 sitting, is covered by exam scholarships that pay the fee or reimburse it. Review courses have their own awards. Once certified, the $250 application fee and $575 a year are yours. The largest single source is the CFP Board Center for Financial Planning, and ten of its awards close on September 30, 2026. The rest of this page lists what covers what, with amounts and links, then the deadlines in date order, then how to apply without disqualifying yourself.
Winthrop & Co. recruits experienced advisors; this page exists because the people we talk to keep asking it for the associates and career changers on their teams. Every figure is from the provider's own page, fetched September 10, 2026. Amounts and dates change each cycle; the links are the record.
The bill, from the source
Coursework. The CFP Board's education requirement is coursework through a CFP Board Registered Program across nine areas, from professional conduct through the capstone, plus a bachelor's degree in any field, which can be finished up to five years after the exam. Providers set their own tuition; the College for Financial Planning, a Kaplan Company, lists its CFP education packages at $5,565 to $8,845, with its premium package at $8,250 paid up front or $8,845 course by course.
The exam. For the November 2026 testing window, the CFP Board's registration page lists $825 for early registration through September 1, $925 standard through October 6, and $1,025 late through October 13. Registration for the March 2027 exam opens October 21, 2026.
After you pass. A $250 non-refundable application fee, then a prorated initial certification fee based on the $575 annual fee, then $575 a year, in one payment. The experience requirement is 6,000 hours of professional experience or 4,000 hours in an apprenticeship pathway, earned before or after the exam.
What the scholarships cover
Four buckets. An award in one bucket rarely pays for another, and the CFP Board's FAQs are explicit that an education scholarship can include textbooks and a review course but never the exam fee.

- FPA chapters: FPA of Dallas/Fort Worth reimburses the $825 fee after a pass, with a 2027 form to come; FPA San Francisco awards $1,000 toward exam fees and study materials, deadline November 30, 2026.
Review courses
- Dan Moisand, CFP Scholarship, CFP Board Center: $1,000 for a candidate re-sitting the exam, $625 to the fee and the remainder to a review course. Closed for November; reopens in October.
- College for Financial Planning and Dalton Education review scholarships, CFP Board Center: the full cost of each provider's exam review for registered candidates from underrepresented groups, Dalton's also for military veterans and spouses. Same cycle.
- FPA of Dallas/Fort Worth: up to $1,400 toward a review course.
Internships that come with funding
The BLX Internship Program places aspiring Black and Latinx planners in paid summer internships at fee-only and fee-based firms, a minimum of $20 an hour, and offers scholarships for CFP coursework, the exam and review courses when funding allows.
The firms that pay for it
For an advisor already in the industry, or choosing a firm, the cheapest scholarship is the employer's. These are the firms whose own careers pages state a CFP benefit, fetched September 10, 2026; firms whose pages say nothing are not listed, which is not the same as saying they do not pay.
- Edward Jones states that it "covers course fees for associates seeking any of 20 different industry designations, including the CFP certification," and told InvestmentNews in February 2024 that it supports credentials through tuition assistance, reimbursement and supported study time.
- UBS, on its Wealth Advice Center careers page, describes a "reimbursable tuition policy" and a "tuition reimbursement program" for the CFP. The page covers that channel; the branch advisor program's terms are not stated there.
- Charles Schwab's financial consultant postings offer "Tuition Reimbursement and our internal CFP Cohort Program," and its Wealth Management Academy page describes support to pass the CFP exam, with coursework expected to be complete or nearly so before the start date.
- Fidelity's financial consultant postings state that its tuition reimbursement program "can help you acquire" the CFP.
- Ameriprise says it supports advisors pursuing the CFP and the CRPC, and pays all fees for the Series 7, Series 66 and insurance exams, with support varying across its advisor channels.
- Wells Fargo lists tuition reimbursement of up to $5,250 a year as a firm-wide benefit; the page does not name the CFP.
- LPL runs a CFP Fast Track program through its Advisor Institute, seven required classes and a pre-exam review enrolled per class; the page does not say who pays.
What no firm page states is an exam-fee reimbursement, a bonus on passing, a tenure requirement, or repayment if you leave. Those terms exist inside firms and are not published. If the credential is part of your decision to join a firm, get the policy in writing, and remember that employer reimbursement usually rules out the exam scholarships above.

How to apply without disqualifying yourself
Five rules, all from the providers' own pages.
- Do not register for the exam before an exam-scholarship decision. The CFP Board Center's FAQs say applicants disqualify themselves this way. Exam windows open months ahead; the scholarship decision comes first.
- Apply to every award you qualify for. The Center allows one education scholarship per person, but nothing stops you applying to all of them, and the eligibility criteria overlap.
- Check the course count. Certificate applicants to the Center's awards must hold a bachelor's degree and have completed fewer than six of the program's courses. If you are already most of the way through, the exam and review awards are the ones open to you.
- Know what employer reimbursement does. It does not bar an education award, but XY Planning Network requires less than 50 percent employer coverage of the exam fee and the Fidelity-funded award requires no other aid on that exam. If your firm pays, take the reimbursement.
- Write the essay to the criteria. Every Center award asks for a statement of commitment to the profession and, where relevant, of financial need. The awards go to the program in two installments, and the FAQs say to enroll within three months of the award.
The CFP Board's scholarship hub and its third-party clearinghouse are the primary references, and a maintained database of about sixty awards is kept at Kitces.com. This page covers the ones verified on the provider's own page on September 10, 2026; check the linked page before you apply, because amounts and dates move every cycle.
