How an advisor affiliates

The channels, in the firm's own terms.

The economics, as publicly reported

Published ranges and filings, not an offer. What a specific practice is offered is a question for the room.

  • RBC's Third Quarter 2026 Report to Shareholders refers to share-based compensation plans for U.S. Wealth Management (including City National), whose liabilities are revalued with the bank's share price and economically hedged, and attributes higher variable compensation in the quarter to higher fee-based client assets.[6]
  • Transition packages for advisors joining from other firms, retention awards and succession or retiring-advisor program terms are not published by the firm; the experienced-advisor page describes dedicated transition resources without stating terms.[8]
  • The firm's Cash Sweep Program Overview states that program banks other than RBC affiliate banks pay RBC Capital Markets a fee of between zero and the federal funds effective rate plus 75 basis points on average daily deposit balances, that the RBC affiliate banks (RBC Bank (Georgia), N.A. and City National Bank) pay a $20 annual per-account fee outside retirement accounts, and that this fee is not shared with the financial advisor.[11]

Membership per the official J.S. Held list, with the joinder qualifications that matter on the day you resign.

RBC Capital Markets, LLC is a Protocol member. The J.S. Held master list carries RBC Capital Markets, LLC (formerly RBC Capital Markets Corporation) as a member since July 1, 2008, with contact information updated February 2, 2018 and the firm name amended December 13, 2023. The list records no joinder qualification and no withdrawal for the entity.[12]

Who tends to move there

The pattern in the public record and the trade press. A pattern, not a recommendation.

The trade press describes one kind of practice arriving at RBC Wealth Management: established teams, most often from wirehouses and other bank-owned or regional firms, with high net worth and ultra high net worth books, that want an employee seat with a bank affiliate behind it for lending, deposits and private banking through City National, and capital markets access through RBC Capital Markets. The firm has said it recruits toward large, experienced teams at $2 million of production and above, that the majority of recent arrivals came from wirehouses, and that its growth markets are Minneapolis, New York, Florida, Southern California, Atlanta and Chicago. The structural feature is a single W-2 model with no independent or RIA seat inside the firm; an advisor who wants to own the practice would custody through RBC Clearing & Custody rather than affiliate with RBC Wealth Management.

questions about RBC Wealth Management are not answered anywhere public. They are answered in the room, for a specific practice, and the answers move the number more than anything above.

01What are the actual terms of the custody agreement, at my asset mix?
Asked in the room
02What is the cash sweep arrangement, and who keeps the spread?
Client cash sweeps by default into RBC Insured Deposits at a priority list of program banks that may include the RBC affiliate banks RBC Bank (Georgia), N.A. and City National Bank, with City National as the primary excess bank. Unaffiliated program banks pay RBC Capital Markets a fee of between zero and the federal funds effective rate plus 75 basis points on average daily balances; affiliate banks pay $20 per account annually outside retirement accounts; the fee is not shared with the financial advisor. For the Credit Interest Program the firm states that the spread between what it earns and what it pays account holders is favorable to the firm.[11]
03What is the all-in cost, in basis points and in dollars, at my revenue and asset mix?
Asked in the room
04What is bundled, and what is charged separately?
Asked in the room
05What moves the number over time?
Asked in the room

An advisor who runs their own RIA on the RBC Clearing & Custody platform files their own ADV.[1]
09What happens if the platform is sold?

Questions advisors ask about RBC Wealth Management

Does RBC Wealth Management have an independent channel?
No. RBC's U.S. financial advisors are W-2 employees of RBC Capital Markets, LLC. Asked in March 2026 whether RBC would enter the independent or RIA space, RBC Wealth Management CEO Neil McLaughlin said the firm is not doing it and that observers will not see it pivot to the independent channel. The same entity's RBC Clearing & Custody division provides clearing and custody to independent broker-dealers and registered investment advisors, which is where an advisor who owns their own firm would sit with RBC.
What entity is an RBC Wealth Management advisor registered under?
RBC Capital Markets, LLC, CRD 31194, SEC file 801-13059, a registered broker-dealer and investment adviser and Member NYSE / FINRA / SIPC. RBC Wealth Management is a division of that entity, as is RBC Clearing & Custody. In the SEC's September 1, 2026 Form ADV data file the entity reports $310.4 billion in regulatory assets under management, 5,908 employees performing investment advisory functions and 511,871 advisory accounts; those figures cover the whole entity, not the wealth division alone.
Is RBC Wealth Management in the Broker Protocol?
Yes. RBC Capital Markets, LLC, formerly RBC Capital Markets Corporation, has been a member since July 1, 2008, per J.S. Held's member list, which records a contact update in 2018 and a name amendment in December 2023 and no joinder qualification or withdrawal.
How many advisors and how much in client assets does RBC Wealth Management U.S. have?
The firm's about page states more than 2,200 financial advisors and $769 billion in total client assets as of May 28, 2026, and Royal Bank of Canada's Annual Report 2025 describes the Private Client Group as a full-service wealth advisory firm with over 2,200 financial advisors. RBC's quarterly report counts 6,295 client-facing advisors across all of its wealth businesses worldwide at July 31, 2026 and does not break out the U.S. figure.
What is City National Bank's relationship to RBC Wealth Management?
City National Bank is an affiliate, acquired by Royal Bank of Canada in 2015, and is reported with the wealth business as U.S. Wealth Management (including City National). The firm's experienced-advisor page states that financial advisors have access to City National Bank and RBC Capital Markets; the parent describes City National as offering lending, deposit, cash management, equipment financing and wealth management products. City National is also one of the two affiliate banks in the RBC Insured Deposits cash sweep program.
