What you receive

Four deliverables. One private process.

Submit once. Within a few business days you'll have what most advisors spend twelve months trying to assemble alone.

01

A curated shortlist

Three to five firms that fit your book, your culture, and your succession horizon. Not the rolodex of whoever called first.

02

Side-by-side economics

Transition packages, ongoing payouts, equity structures, and platform fees compared on a single page. The numbers no one wants to give you.

03

Discreet introductions

When you're ready, we open the door to the people who actually approve your deal. Not a recruiter. Not a regional gatekeeper.

04

Negotiation leverage

Multiple credible options sitting on the table at the same time. The single best determinant of the package you'll be offered.

Why advisors choose us

What changes when you stop running this alone.

Most advisors approach a transition the same way they approach a client's estate plan: thoughtfully, but only once. We've run this process more than three hundred times.

Confidentiality

Your name doesn't leave the room.

Outreach is controlled, paced, and only happens after you’ve approved the firms in writing. No leakage to your branch, your manager, or the wirehouse rumor mill.

Breadth

Every credible path on one page.

Wirehouse to boutique, hybrid-RIA, fully independent, succession recap. We maintain real relationships across all of them, so the comparison is honest.

Leverage

Multiple offers. One quiet table.

Advisors who run a structured process consistently land packages 15–35% above the first verbal. Leverage is what we manufacture. Negotiation is what we run.

Alignment

No cost. No agenda. Ever.

Our contracts sit with the platforms, never with you. We don’t earn a dollar more if you go to firm A versus firm B. The advice has nothing to defend.

For the record

This isn't recruiting. Here's the ledger.

Recruiting firms and Winthrop & Co. both get paid by the platforms. The difference is everything else: how the shortlist is built, what stays private, and who is on the line when the offer hits the table at seven o'clock at night.

Who pays whom

Typical recruiter

Recruiter is paid by the firm that signs you, often a percentage of your transition package.

Winthrop & Co.

Same. Fee is paid by the platform, never the advisor. The difference is what we are willing to walk away from.

Pipeline incentive

Typical recruiter

Volume firm. Hundreds of advisors in pipeline at any time, optimized for placement count.

Winthrop & Co.

Two partners. Roughly thirty active engagements per year. Optimized for the right placement, not the next one.

First conversation

Typical recruiter

Sales call. Pitch deck for the firm currently paying the highest. Pressure to commit before you have alternatives.

Winthrop & Co.

Read of your intake, by a partner, before any firm is contacted. No pitch. Just a diagnostic.

Firm coverage

Typical recruiter

Two or three platforms in active rotation. The shortlist tends to look the same across every advisor.

Winthrop & Co.

150+ firm relationships across wirehouse, regional, boutique, hybrid-RIA, custodian, and independent. Every advisor's shortlist is rebuilt from scratch.

What stays private

Typical recruiter

Your information may circulate as a teaser to multiple firms before introductions begin.

Winthrop & Co.

Your name never leaves the office without your written go-ahead. Period. No teasers. No exceptions.

After you sign

Typical recruiter

Engagement effectively ends. Future questions handled by the placing firm.

Winthrop & Co.

Same partners on the line for transition execution, day-one client conversations, and the first review at six months.

We don't object to recruiters. We just don't do what they do, and we don't want to be confused with them.

Submit privately

The process

Four steps. Sixty to a hundred days.

Most advisors run their entire transition between Q1 of one year and the first quarter of the next. We move at your pace, not ours.

Day one is when your clients get the call. Everything before that is preparation.

  1. Step 01

    You submit. Privately.

Six fields and a few notes. That's the entire intake. A partner reads it the same business day. Not an intake coordinator. Not an algorithm.

  2. Step 02

    We build your shortlist.

Within two business days you'll have a shortlist of three to five firms, chosen against your numbers, your geography, your succession plan, and your client base.

  3. Step 03

    Quiet introductions.

When you're ready, we open the door to firm leadership directly. Always controlled. Always to decision-makers. Always with you in the driver's seat.

  4. Step 04

    You decide. We negotiate.

Compare offers side-by-side, run diligence on whichever firms you choose, and let us hold the negotiation. You sign on day one with the package you actually wanted.

The first step is the smallest

Six fields. One private memo. A real shortlist this week.

What advisors say

On the record. Off the books.

“I'd been told for years what my book was ‘worth.’ What Winthrop put in front of me, in writing, in three weeks, was forty percent above any number I'd ever heard. They held the negotiation. I just signed.”
$310M wirehouse advisor · transitioned 2025
“What I appreciated most was what they didn't do. No recruiter follow-ups. No firm calling my branch manager. The shortlist arrived, the introductions happened on my schedule, and the offer landed twenty days later.”
$680M two-partner team · moved to hybrid-RIA, 2024

W&Co.

Three covenants

What we will never do.

Confidential, or we don't proceed.

Your name does not leave our office without your written authorization. Ever. The first breach is also the last.

Founder-led. Not handed off.

The partners read every intake personally. You will never be passed to an associate, a recruiter, or an offshore team.

Three offers, or no engagement.

If we cannot put three real, competing offers on the table, we will tell you on the first call and refer you out for free.

The Firm
II

Two partners · founder-led

Founder-led. Not handed off.

Winthrop & Co. is run by two partners. They write the memos. They make the introductions. They sit on the call when the counter-offer hits the table at seven o'clock at night.

The firm is intentionally small. By design.

Read by partners

Every intake.

Your six-field submission is opened, read, and triaged by a partner the same business day. Never an associate. Never a queue.

Decades inside

Forty years combined.

The partners have spent their entire careers inside the firms you're considering. Wirehouses, custodians, hybrid platforms, RIAs. Both sides of every desk.

Single concierge

One number. One inbox.

From first message to signed offer, you talk to the same two people. No account managers, no hand-offs, no rotating juniors.

FAQ

  • Does this cost me anything?
No. There is no fee, no retainer, and no back-end commission paid by you at any point. Our contracts sit with the firms and platforms we introduce you to. If you decide to stay where you are, you owe us nothing.
  • How exactly do you get paid?
When an advisor we introduce you to brings you on, the firm pays us a one-time placement fee out of their own budget. Never out of your transition package, never out of your future production, never out of your client revenue. Our incentive is alignment with the right firm, not the highest-paying one. We will turn down a placement we don't believe in.
  • How confidential is this, really?
Your name does not leave our office without your written authorization. We never market your book, never circulate teasers, and never tell a firm you're looking until you say so. The standard posture for every engagement is total discretion.
  • Will I get recruiter calls?
No. We are not a recruiting firm and we do not sell, share, or hand off your information. The only people who will contact you are the partners at Winthrop & Co. And only when you tell us to.
  • What happens in the first 24 hours after I submit?
A partner reads your intake the same business day. You receive a private confirmation email with a partner's direct mobile within an hour. Within 24 hours we've mapped your shortlist criteria internally and are reaching out to platform leadership where the fit is clear. Within two business days the memo lands in your inbox.
  • Can I see a sample memo before I submit?
Yes. Email a partner directly at info@winthropco.com and we will send you a fully anonymized sample Private Match memo. Same format and depth your own would take. No commitment, no follow-up sequence.
  • I'm not sure I'm moving. Should I still submit?
Yes. About a third of the advisors who run a Private Match end up renewing where they are with a clearer sense of what their book is worth. Knowing your number is the asset, regardless of what you do with it.
  • What if my current firm finds out?
They won't, unless you tell them. We use clean diligence protocols, separate communication channels, and never put you in a room with a firm until you've approved the introduction in writing.
  • How long does the whole process take?
From first submission to a written shortlist is typically two business days. From shortlist to signed offer is usually 60 to 100 days, depending on how quickly you want to move and how long diligence takes on your side. Day one is when your clients get the call. Everything before that is preparation.
  • Do you only work with advisors above a certain size?
Most engagements are with advisors and teams between $250M and $5B+ in AUM. That's where the platform negotiation leverage is most pronounced. If you're below that range, submit anyway. We will either work with you directly or place you with a trusted partner firm at no cost. We do not turn away advisors with a real book and a real question.
  • What kinds of moves do you handle?
We handle ALL transitions within the wealth management space. Our seasoned professionals have a 10+ year track record of successful placements across every sector of financial services: wirehouse, regional, boutique, hybrid-RIA, custodian, fully independent, and succession-driven M&A. If it involves an advisory book moving, we have run the process.
